견성(見性)이라 하는 것은 비하건대 거부 장자가 자기의 재산을 자기의 재산으로 알지 못하고 지내다가 비로소 알게 된 것과 같고, 솔성(率性)이라 하는 것은 이미 자기의 소유인 것을 알았으나 전일에 잃어버리고 지내는 동안 모두 다른 사람에게 빼앗긴 바 되었는지라 여러모로 주선하여 그 잃었던 권리를 회복함과 같나니라. – 대종경, 성리품 8장

“Seeing the nature” is like a millionaire who, without realizing that his assets are his own, one day eventually comes to realize that fact. “Commanding the nature” is like a millionaire who now realizes that fact but who for some time has lost those assets to others during the days of his ignorance and therefore resorts to various means to recover the rights he had lost. – Master Sotaesan

A deep-rooted tree is not uprooted by the wind, and a well fed by a deep spring does not dry up in a drought. The root of human life is religious faith, and the spring of human life is practice. The life with deep faith will not bend under any hardship and adverse condition, and the living with deep practice will transcend any temptation and attain tranquility. – Master Chongsan

참 자유는 방종(放縱)을 절제하는 데에서 오고, 큰 이익은 사욕을 버리는 데에서 오나니, 그러므로 참 자유를 원하는 사람은 먼저 계율을 잘 지키고, 큰 이익을 구하는 사람은 먼저 공심(公心)을 양성하나니라. -대종경, 요훈품 42장

True freedom is attained by refraining from self-indulgence; great benefit is attained by ridding oneself of selfish desires. Therefore, a person who seeks true freedom must first keep the precepts well; a person who seeks great benefit must first foster a public spirit. – Master Sotaesan
